ATHENAEUM JAZZ AT SCRIPPS RESEARCH-Charles Lloyd and Gerald Clayton
March 22 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm$35 – $40
The series continues on Sunday, March 22, with Charles Lloyd and Gerald Clayton. Widely revered as one of the leading artists in jazz, tenor saxophonist Lloyd returns to the Athenaeum series for his first local performance since 2015. Named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, this country’s highest jazz honor, he also received France’s highest artistic accolade as a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres, in 2019. Of a performance at New York’s Village Vanguard, JazzTimes wrote, “Lloyd remains an inveterate seeker. His tenor scythed the air, his every entrance into the music dramatic and perfectly timed . . . The walls disappeared that night, and we all had the chance to float off on Charles Lloyd’s transcendent stream of consciousness.” The New York Times wrote, “Lloyd is the rare jazz artist whose every appearance qualifies as an event . . . In his mixture of Blues phrases, classical quotations, howls and screams and gentle melodic sensibility, Lloyd has come up with a strange and beautiful distillation of the American experience.” Stereophile commented, “Lloyd’s series of breakthroughs to catharsis are like a spirit soaring into the blinding light of freedom . . . He plays with more strength and passion today than he did when he was 26.” This performance features Lloyd in an intimate duo setting with magnificent young pianist Gerald Clayton, who led his own quartet date at TSRI in fall 2019.
