Beyond the Selfie: Exploring Portraiture at the Athenaeum

From August 7th until August 11th, the Athenaeum will be having a class specifically for kids between the ages of nine and eleven focusing on self-portrait art. Before the selfie, there was the self-portrait. We have become so used to seeing our faces through digital screens. This class will encourage children to use pen/pencil/paint as a method of interpreting their own faces by engaging in active looking. Over the course of the week, this class will examine famous artists’ self-portraits throughout history. Each day students will create a self-portrait in the style of the artist being studied that day. Drawing a self-portrait can be a challenging task—this class encourages looking to really understand how our face is uniquely ours. Members and non-members can register anytime before the class begins!
