MCASD Grand Reopening
April 9, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 8:00 pm
Free
Let’s celebrate! We invite the San Diego community to join us for MCASD’s reopening day. Experience the new collection galleries, the special exhibition Niki de Saint Phalle in the 1960s, enjoy architectural tours of the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Building designed by Selldorf Architects, picnic in the oceanview Art Park, peruse the new event spaces and outdoor terraces, and celebrate the future of contemporary art in our community.
Kathryn Kanjo, the David C. Copley Director and CEO and Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) will provide remarks at 9:45AM and greet visitors as the Museum’s doors officially reopen to the community starting at 10AM. In-gallery spotlight tours with Museum Educators and Curators will highlight significant works from the Museum’s holdings in the newly expanded collection galleries. The special exhibition Niki de Saint Phalle in the 1960s co-organized by MCASD and The Menil Collection in Houston will have its West Coast debut in the Iris and Matthew Strauss Galleries.
Guided art-making activities inspired by the artwork on display for children and adults will be offered in the Conrad Prebys Learning Center. Live music and entertainment will be ongoing in the Art Park, a free community space accessed from Prospect Street. Complimentary tasting bites will be offered throughout the day by Urban Kitchen Group, which will operate the Museum’s revamped cafe, set to reopen in July. A selection of wine and beer will be available to purchase and enjoy as you take in the seaside view. Our current community of members and those who have newly joined will receive exclusive perks at The Shop and a special gift at entry. Self-guided tours and other experiences will also be offered, allowing visitors to interact with the newly expanded MCASD in a way that suits their needs and interests.
