Aaron Diehl

Aaron Diehl Trio

The winter series continues on Tuesday, February 19, with an Athenaeum debut by the Aaron Diehl Trio, featuring Diehl on piano, Paul Sikivie on bass, and Lawrence Leathers on drums. Aaron Diehl is one of today’s most sought-after jazz virtuosos, consistently playing with what the New York Times describes as “melodic precision, harmonic erudition, and elegant restraint.” Diehl’s performances, collaborations, and compositions constitute a leading force in today’s generation of jazz contemporaries, spearheading a distinct union of traditional and fresh artistry. Recent highlights include serving as Music Director for the Jazz at Lincoln Center New Orleans Songbook concert series, performing in the New York premiere of Philip Glass’s Complete Piano Etudes at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, collaborating with Spanish flamenco guitarist Dani de Morón in Flamenco Meets Jazz, and touring the United States and Europe with Grammy-nominated jazz singer Cécile McLorin Salvant.

The Wall Street Journal wrote, “Classically trained, Mr. Diehl fell in love with jazz in his teens and toured with Wynton Marsalis at age 17. The Juilliard School graduate is known for his meticulous touch and for making music that both nods to and expands on foundations laid by past jazz greats.”
