Charles McPherson

Charles McPherson NYC Quartet

The series opens on Tuesday, February 26, with a special celebration of the 80th birthday of San Diego treasure and internationally renowned jazz icon Charles McPherson. McPherson will be feted later this spring in New York City by Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in a joint birthday concert with piano legend McCoy Tyner. For this San Diego celebration, McPherson performs for the first time in his hometown with his NYC quartet, comprising Jeb Patton on piano, Jeff Littleton on bass, and Billy Drummond on drums. For more than 50 years, McPherson has been one of the most expressive and highly regarded voices in jazz. His rich musical style, rooted in blues and bebop, has influenced and inspired generations of musicians and listeners.

The Los Angeles Times wrote, “One word best describes the way Charles McPherson played: dazzling. McPherson, who arrived on the New York jazz scene in 1960 and soon made a name for himself with bassist Charles Mingus and as a recording artist, has long been a superbly inventive Charlie Parker-influenced jazzman … We have Charles McPherson to remind us that bebop is still one of the jazz world’s most demanding improvisational disciplines, as well as one of its most musically rewarding.” This concert is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts via the Western Jazz Presenters Network.
