Three years ago, we held our very first Nowruz celebration in La Jolla. We were excited, hopeful, and full of joy. Last year, when we celebrated for the second time, we felt so proud that this gathering was becoming a signature, annual tradition. The love and positive feedback from everyone who attended meant everything to us, and we couldn’t wait to celebrate again this year.
We were already planning, preparing, and looking forward to our third Nowruz, ready to welcome spring together.
What we always loved most about our Nowruz celebration was its simplicity. It was never about religion or politics. It was about spring, renewal, and our Persian New Year. It reminded us of home, of family, of childhood memories, and of the happy moments we once shared.
But this year is different.
As Iranians living outside of Iran, we are constantly glued to the news, watching, waiting, and checking every moment to see what is happening to our people, our families, and our homeland. With everything unfolding in Iran and oppression by the Islamic regime, this does not feel like a time to celebrate.
With heavy hearts and in solidarity with our innocent sisters and brothers in Iran who are suffering and in pain, we have decided not to celebrate right now. This is not a cancellation, but a postponement until a time when joy feels right again. We will announce a new date when the time feels right. Until then, Iran is in our hearts. Stay tuned! We will celebrate again very soon.
Sincerely,
Elnaz Iraj, La Jolla Village Merchant Association Vice President
