Reflections is an art-making workshop series designed to serve adults 55 and older.

In this new workshop series, participants will explore materiality, push boundaries, and break out of the canvas. Through material exploration, we will investigate consumerism, everyday objects, and ephemerality in contemporary art.

Participants will consider and learn the following:

  • The significance of everyday materials
  • The legacy of varied artmaking techniques
  • The importance of art movements that break down gender stereotypes

Each workshop will include an investigation of contemporary art-making techniques and materials. No prior art experience is required. Transportation will be provided, if required. Participants may join one session (two days) or the full series (four sessions; eight days).

Session dates in this series are:

  • Session 1: Friday, January 19 and Friday, January 26

Weekly Program

Project description:

In each workshop set, create a fabric scroll that showcases a different art technique – printing, embroidery, weaving, and sewing.

Session 1: Friday, January 19 and Friday, January 26

Create your own fabric prints!

Taking inspiration from Yinka Shonibare and Sam Gilliam, we will explore ephemerality while breaking out of the confines of the canvas. Through close looking, we will investigate what draws us in as viewers and how we would like to draw viewers into our prints.

Session 2: Friday, February 2 and Friday, February 9

What is the importance of everyday materials, like burlap, and how do contemporary artists use and re-contextualize them?

We will study artists Alexandre da Cunha and Jannis Kounellis, exploring the significance of embroidery techniques, imagery, and meaning in text.

San Diego-based guest artist Allison Manch will co-teach these sessions.

Session 3: Friday, February 16 and Friday, February 23

Contemplate the impact of everyday and varied materials through an exploration of weaving.

Through the work of Gabriel Kuri and Tanya Aguiniga, we will discuss the significance of materials in our consumerist society, questioning material culture, consumerism, waste, and the border region.

Session 4: Friday, March 1 and Friday, March 8

How is sewing a means of creating functional objects and a means of creating art?

In this workshop set, investigate the history of sewing and creating fabric panels and the many facets of sewing, including gender roles, materiality, and more.
